Author Guidelines

Dear Author,

The International Commission on the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition (ICAF) thanks you for considering Archives on Food, Culture and Nutrition for the dissemination of your work. To ensure that your manuscript can be evaluated, please take into account the following guidelines:

Submission and format

  • All manuscripts must be submitted exclusively through this OJS platform.

  • The main file must be submitted in Word (.doc/.docx) or RTF format, with DIN A4 page size and 2.5 cm margins.

  • The maximum length is 20 pages for articles and 4 pages for reviews.

  • Maximum length per article: 8,000 words, excluding the bibliography.

Typographic style

  • Text in Arial 12, left-aligned, with 1.5 line spacing.

  • Do not add spacing between paragraphs or indent the beginning of each paragraph.

Notes

  • Notes must be inserted as footnotes in Arial 10, with single line spacing, and should be brief and relevant.

  • Do not include author information within the manuscript; these details must be added to the submission form in OJS.

Abstract and keywords

  • Include an abstract of no more than 250 words and up to five keywords.

  • Both the abstract and keywords must be presented in Spanish and English.

  • The abstract should describe: the research problem, study method, main results, conclusions, theoretical/practical implications and, where applicable, the contribution to the state of the art.

Citations and references

  • Citations must always be included in the body of the text, using the author-year format; for direct quotations, the page number must be added.

  • Quotations of fewer than four lines: integrated into the text within quotation marks.

  • Quotations of four lines or more: presented as a separate paragraph in Arial 10, single line spacing, without quotation marks.

  • Every reference included in the bibliography must be cited in the text using the author’s surname and year.

  • The APA style (7th edition) is recommended for citations and references.

Images, tables and graphs

  • Images must be submitted separately, identified and numbered, in .jpeg format, with a minimum quality of 300 dpi, free of copyright restrictions or accompanied by the appropriate licence and documentation.

  • Tables and graphs must be submitted in editable format (.doc/.docx), with an explanatory caption centred in Arial 10, numbering, and source and date where applicable.

Copyright and privacy

  • Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) licence.

  • Personal data will be used exclusively for the purposes of the journal and will not be made available to third parties.

Pre-submission checklist

Before submitting, please ensure that:

  • The main file is anonymised.

  • The manuscript is original, has not been previously published, and is not under consideration by another journal.

  • The file is in Word (.doc/.docx), RTF or WordPerfect format.

  • Abstract and keywords in both languages have been included.

  • All cited references appear in the final bibliography.

  • URLs are provided for references whenever possible.

Editorial and ethical policies

Peer review

AFOCUN applies a double-blind peer review system, ensuring impartiality and confidentiality.

All manuscripts are subject to external peer review, which may be conducted by reviewers who are either members or non-members of the Editorial Board, ensuring independence and objectivity. The Editorial Team will conduct the initial review of the manuscript, select and assign reviewers, and coordinate the revisions suggested.

The final decision regarding acceptance, rejection or revision rests exclusively with the Editor-in-Chief.

Each manuscript is evaluated for its thematic relevance, originality, methodological rigour and contribution to knowledge, receiving at least two independent evaluations.

Plagiarism and ethics

  • Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. AFOCUN uses specialised software to detect textual similarities.

  • If plagiarism or improper duplication is detected, the journal may reject or retract the manuscript, following COPE guidelines.

Self-plagiarism: it is considered acceptable only when it makes a significant contribution to knowledge and has editorial consent.

Conflicts of interest and research ethics

All participants in the editorial process must declare any potential conflicts of interest that could affect the objectivity of the work.

Research involving human participants or animals must comply with international ethical standards and obtain approval from an ethics committee, where applicable.

Open access

The journal follows an open access policy under the CC BY 4.0 licence.

Digital preservation

  • Regular backups.

  • Storage in the institutional repository of the University of Extremadura.

  • Assignment of DOIs to new materials.
